Bipolar disorder is a serious mental illness that affects many children and adolescents. Symptoms can be so severe that it affects their ability to function on a daily basis. When children are suffering from bipolar disorder, they will act out in a variety of ways, not uncommonly in ways that are sexual in nature. These sexual behaviors can quickly become problematic when children and adolescents begin acting out in ways that harm others.
At Piney Ridge Treatment Center, we offer a program that is designed to meet the needs of children and adolescents who are suffering from behavioral and mood disorders that have been complicated further by the presence of sexually maladaptive behaviors. We are the only treatment center in the state of Arkansas that has a program designed specifically to meet the unique needs that these children present. We have been providing successful, thorough, and comprehensive care for boys and girls ages 7-17 since 1996, and we want to help your child get the help that he or she needs and deserves.
How to Help a Loved One
Helping a loved one get treatment for bipolar disorder
Having a child suffering from bipolar disorder can be extremely difficult. You may have found yourself struggling to simply get through the day as you worry about your child’s behavior and how he or she will react to the situations he or she is presented with. You are probably experiencing a wide array of emotions and might be questioning whether or not your child is truly suffering from bipolar disorder, or if the behaviors are simply adolescence at its extreme. Children and adolescents suffering from bipolar disorder will typically experience some of the following symptoms:
- Explosive temper tantrums
- Oppositional and defiant behaviors
- Aggressive behaviors
- Manipulative behaviors
- Restless / constant fidgeting
- Decreased or increased need for sleep
- Rapid speech
- Isolation
- Hypersexuality
- Impulsivity
- Self-harm
- Thoughts and feelings of grandiosity
If you have noticed any of these warning signs in your child, especially accompanied with problematic sexual behaviors, a residential treatment program is often a good resource for getting your child the help he or she needs. With proper treatment, children and adolescents suffering from bipolar disorder and sexual behavior problems can learn how to successfully manage their symptoms and develop healthy behaviors and boundaries.
Why Consider Treatment
Why consider treatment for bipolar disorder at Piney Ridge Treatment Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas
If you have been watching your child’s behavior become out of control, you are probably feeling worried about what his or her future holds. You might be questioning whether or not these symptoms and behaviors are things that he or she will grow out of or if they will worsen over time. Your worries and concerns are understandable. If left untreated, the consequences of bipolar disorder and sexually maladaptive behaviors can enter an entirely new realm of severity.
Residential treatment programs have proven to be successful in helping children and adolescents overcome the destructive path of their sexual behavior problems while taking control of the symptoms of bipolar disorder. When children enter a residential treatment program, they are able to walk away from the stressors of their everyday lives and live in a safe environment where they are monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In this environment, they are able to focus solely on their treatment and healing.

Types of Treatment

At Piney Ridge, our treatment program is designed using an evidence-based model of care, with trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy at the core. We combine various therapeutic methods to provide the most holistic treatments possible as we help our patients begin the path of healing. These treatment methods include:
Medication management: One of the most crucial aspects of treating the symptoms of bipolar disorder is psychotropic medication. We have three psychiatrists and one internist on staff that will meet with your child at least once every 28 days. Medication will be monitored for efficacy and altered as needed.
Individual therapy: Individual sessions allow your child to meet one-on-one with his or her therapist. Children and adolescents benefit from this time as it provides them an opportunity to develop personal problem-solving skills and coping skills. Their therapist can help them learn appropriate ways to behave, ways to cope with their anxiety, identify traumatic experiences, and learn how to control their impulses. Individual therapy sessions take place at least once a week, but additional sessions can be added if needed.
Group therapy: Group therapy sessions are a time for our patients to gather together to enhance positive social interactions and practice learned coping skills. Group sessions are held daily and cover topics such as empathy skills, anger management, family issues, and sexual safety. Goal groups are held every morning and rehab groups are held every evening.
Family therapy: The role of the family is extremely important in our treatment process. Family sessions are held on a weekly or biweekly basis based on the needs of each patient. These sessions are designed to help parents learn how to implement rules about sexual behavior, enhance community and social skills, and use strategies that will reduce behavioral problems. In addition to the family therapy sessions, visitation is available three times per week
Experiential program: In an attempt to make our treatment program as holistic as possible, we offer a thorough experiential program. This program includes school-based programming, recreational therapy, expressive therapies, and spiritual therapy. Occupational therapists and speech therapists are also available to work with patients as necessary.
Continuing Care
Continuing care and levels of treatment for bipolar disorder
At Piney Ridge, the discharge process is thorough – we understand that for our patients to leave our program armed with comfort and knowledge that they can return to their lives at home, continued care is often necessary. As a result, we make referrals appropriately based on each patient’s treatment plan. Case management is an ongoing process, which allows us to work on the discharge process intensively prior to patients’ last day of treatment so that nothing that comes as a surprise. For our teenage patients, we will help arrange transfers to college, to the military, or to independent living situations, based on needs.
We don’t want you, your child, and your family to continue suffering. At Piney Ridge Treatment Center, will do everything in our power to make sure that all of your needs are met and that your child leaves treatment with the confidence that he or she needs in order to successfully build a happy, fulfilling life.
